I feel that Hyperbaric Medicine is an ever-growing field that

I am proud to be a part of!

-Zeeshan Jafri, Hyperbaric Masters Student

In 1994, the Board of Trustees for SABA University School of Medicine approved the Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Hyperbaric Medicine. Hyperbaric Medicine is a growing field with a steadily increasing presence in the hospitals and medical centers in North America. Hospitals, medical centers and free standing treatment programs are utilizing hyperbaric oxygen (HBOT) therapy on a variety of patients with very positive results. Graduates will be entering a career field that is growing in demand throughout the  world.

The Saba University School of Medicine has a special position among medical schools in its history of involvement in this field of study. The location of the school on Saba, a world-class diving site, makes it a perfect site for the study of hyperbaric medicine.

What is Hyperbaric Medicine (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Medicine (HBOT) is recognized by the FDA and is an appropriate treatment for at least fourteen conditions- the number continues to rise as new research shows the increasing benefit of HBOT! Oxygen is an essential part of the body's physiologic processes and is integral in its healing process. HBOT increases the delivery of oxygen to the body's systems in an attempt to facilitate this recovery.

Patients who undergo HBOT are placed in a Hyperbaric Chamber and 100% Oxygen is administered at a partial pressure greater than 1 atm. Saba University has its own Hyperbaric Chamber and students are trained in its operation.

Hyperbaric Research

Students engage in research projects during their third semester of the Program.  Current Research at Saba University investigates the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on blood coagulation factors, reactive oxygen species and the effects of antioxidant therapy, and lactic acid clearance rates following intense exercise.  New studies are developed every semester as Hyperbaric III is devoted entirely to research in hyperbaric medicine.

Evaluation

Students would be required to successfully complete all of the basic science coursework included in the Hyperbaric Medicine program. For the 3-course series in hyperbaric medicine, evaluation would include:

  • Hyperbaric Medicine I: A series of short quizzes, each covering the material presented in the previous class session. Written examination and oral presentation at the end of the semester.
  • Hyperbaric Medicine II:  A series of short quizzes, each covering the material presented in the previous class session. Two oral presentations.
  • Hyperbaric Medicine III: Final research paper (literature search or original research)
